Microalgae expression system

In the past decades, transgenic plants system has attracted the attention of pharmaceutical company for biopharmaceuticals production. Microalgae, also called microphytes, are polyphyletic groups ranging from prokaryotes to eukaryotes, such as Synechococcus and Chlamydomonas. It has been used for production of food, food additives, and cosmetics for a long time. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is the most popular microalgae used in research studies. As eukaryotes, algae can perform posttranslational modifications such as glycosylation, which are often necessary for protein function. Besides, microalgae are toxin free and animal free in production of recombinant protein, which makes microalgae has a advantage in biosecurity. With the posttranslational modifications and reduced pathogenic compounds contamination, algae become more and more attractive for bio-pharmaceuticals production.

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, as the unicellular green microalga, is the one of model organisms. In the past decades, it had been used in production of enzymes, antigenic peptides or antibodies and the application of algal system has gaining the interest in valuable biopharmaceutical production. Besides, target protein allowed to express in both nuclear and chloroplast genomes of Chlamydomonas.
