Chloride ions react with mercuric thiocyanate to form insoluble mercuric chloride, releasing an equivalent amount of thiocyanate ions, which then combine with iron ions in the reagent to form orange-red ferric thiocyanate, tested at 480nm, with the color intensity being proportional to the chloride ion concentration.
