In an acidic medium, iron is released from complexes and then reduced to ferrous iron by a reducing agent. It reacts with ferrozine to form a purple-red compound, which has a characteristic absorption peak at 562nm. The iron content can be calculated from it and is suitable for detecting iron content in tissues, serum, and other samples.
