Polyamine oxidase (PAO, EC 1.5.3.3) is widely present in animals, plants, and microorganisms. It catalyzes the oxidation of polyamines to aldehydes, and its activity is closely related to nucleic acid and protein synthesis. It also has a relationship with plant stress physiology. PAO catalyzes the production of aldehydes and hydrogen peroxide from polyamines, and the resulting hydrogen peroxide reacts with 4-amino antipyrine to produce a colored substance with a maximum absorption peak at 510nm. The PAO enzyme activity can be determined by measuring the change in absorbance at 510nm.
