Betaine is a biological alkaloid widely distributed in plants, animals, and microorganisms. Under strong acidic conditions, it reacts with Reinhardt's salt to produce a red precipitate, which dissolves in acetone to form a pink solution with a characteristic absorption peak at 525nm. By measuring the absorbance at 525nm, the content of betaine in the sample can be calculated.
