Glucose in the blood of mammals is the main form of sugar transport within the body. Blood glucose concentration is regulated by the nervous system and hormones to remain relatively stable; imbalances result in hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. Glucose is oxidized by glucose oxidase to gluconic acid and hydrogen peroxide; peroxidase catalyzes the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide with 4-aminophenazone to form a colored compound. By measuring the characteristic absorption peak of the colored compound at 510nm, the blood glucose content can be determined.
