Hexokinase (HK, EC 2.7.1.1) is widely present in animals, plants, microorganisms, and cultured cells and is one of the rate-limiting enzymes of the glycolytic pathway. HK phosphorylates glucose to produce glucose-6-phosphate, which further reacts with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and NADP, measuring the increase in NADPH absorption at 340 nm to calculate the activity of hexokinase.
