Ascorbic acid (AsA), also known as Vitamin C, is an important antioxidant that plays a regulatory role in redox metabolic reactions. The ratio of AsA to dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) (AsA/DHA) is another important indicator of cellular oxidative status. Reduced ascorbic acid (AsA) reduces ferric ions to ferrous ions, which then react with 4,7-Diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline to form a red complex with a characteristic absorption peak at 534nm. The color intensity is proportional to the content of reduced ascorbic acid.
