Under alkaline conditions, magnesium ions in the sample react with dimethylaminobenzyl blue to form a colored complex, which has maximum absorption at 510nm. The absorbance is proportional to the content of magnesium. By comparing with magnesium standard solution treated in the same way, the content of serum magnesium can be calculated. EGTA masks calcium ions to eliminate the interference of calcium ions.
