Excess iron is added to the serum to bind all the transferrin in the serum. An iron adsorbent is then added to adsorb the excess iron. The iron content is then measured using the serum iron measurement method; this amount is called the Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC). Subtracting the serum iron value from TIBC gives the Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC).
